Privacy policy

This policy covers the Surgery 2.0 mobile application and the website at surgery.anandgodbole.com. It is written to be read rather than to be survived, and it describes what actually happens, not what we might one day want to do.

Who is responsible

Surgery 2.0 is published by Dr Anand N. Godbole, trading as Godbole Medical Academy, in Pune, Maharashtra, India. Dr Godbole is the data controller for everything described here.

You can use the app without giving us anything

The free chapters of the question bank can be read without an account. If you never sign in, nothing in the table below is collected, and your answers stay on your own device.

You need an account only if you want your progress to follow you between devices, or if you hold a membership.

What we collect, and why

• Email address

  Required, when you create an account

  It is the account. It identifies you at sign-in, restores your progress on a new device, and is how we reach you about a membership.

• Name

  Required, at first setup

  So the app can address you, and so a membership can be recorded against a person.

• Phone number

  Required, at first setup

  To contact you about a membership or a payment. We do not send marketing messages.

• Stage and year of study

  Optional

  To pitch the questions at the examination you are actually sitting.

• Examination track

  Set by you in the app

  Chooses between NEET-PG, superspecialty and MRCS material.

• App activity

  As you use the app

  Which questions you have answered and whether you got them right, so progress, the daily five and the streak work across your devices.

• Device name and an app-generated device identifier

  When a membership reads a paid chapter

  To enforce the limit on how many devices one membership may be read on. It is generated by the app; it is not an advertising identifier and not a hardware serial number.

• Membership status

  If you buy a membership

  To unlock the chapters you paid for and to know when access expires.

What we do not collect

• No advertising identifiers, and no advertising of any kind.
• No location, contacts, photos, microphone or camera.
• No third-party analytics or tracking pixels.
• No health information about you or about any patient.
• No card numbers, ever. See payment below.

Payment

Nothing is ever charged inside the app. A membership is bought on our website, in your own browser, and the payment is handled by Razorpay, who are the payment processor. Card and banking details are entered on Razorpay's own page and are never seen by, sent to, or stored by us. We receive only the fact that a payment succeeded and an order reference.

Who else handles your data

We do not sell your data, and we do not share it with anyone for their own purposes. It is processed on our behalf by:

• Google Firebase, for sign-in and for storing your account record and progress.
• Cloudflare, which serves the website and the parts of the app that are fetched rather than bundled.
• Razorpay, for payments, as described above.

Each acts on our instructions under its own terms. We may also disclose data if we are legally required to.

Where your data is, and how it is protected

Your account record is held in Google Firebase, on Google's infrastructure, which may be outside India. Everything travels over an encrypted connection (HTTPS), and access rules on the database permit you to read and write your own record and nobody else's.

No system is perfect, and we do not pretend otherwise. What we can say is that we hold as little as the app can function with, which is the only real protection there is.

What is on your device and what is fetched

The free chapters of the question bank are inside the app and work with no signal. If you hold a membership, the remaining chapters are fetched once and kept on your device so they keep working offline. The Resident zone, which is recent advances, the clinical examination cases and the OSCE stations, is served from our site rather than shipped inside the app, so it needs a connection to open.

How long we keep it

Your account record is kept for as long as the account exists. If you delete your account it is removed immediately, as described below. Records we are required to keep for tax or accounting reasons, such as the fact and amount of a payment, are kept for as long as the law requires and no longer.

Your rights

You may ask us what we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected, ask for it to be deleted, or withdraw your consent by deleting your account. Write to gmaapplicaton@gmail.com. We will answer within 30 days.

Children

Surgery 2.0 is made for qualified doctors and postgraduate medical trainees. It is not directed at children, it is not designed to appeal to them, and we do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 18. If you believe a child has given us data, write to us and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes in a way that matters, the date at the top changes and the app will say so. Continuing to use the app after a change means you accept it.
